Under parts are white the rump being rich brown.  Never still the bird moves up the tree in jerky movements pressing its tail to the wood for support looking for food: insects and caterpillars. Eating small nuts and seeds in winter.  Once it reaches the top it will fly down . Lives in deciduous and conifer woods prefers a red wood tree. Call is a thin-pitched wavering ‘tsee, tsee’ : song  is a high pitched thrill followed by a warble heard from February –April once again in autumn.
